Eheim Pickup 45 Internal Filter: Engineered for Optimal Mechanical Filtration in Compact Aquariums
The Eheim Pickup 45 is a German-engineered, compact internal aquarium filter meticulously designed for efficient mechanical particulate removal in freshwater tanks ranging from 20 to 45 liters. Featuring a robust centrifugal pump delivering a fixed 180 LPH flow rate with a remarkably low 5W power consumption, it ensures consistent water clarity and minimal operational cost.
Quick Answer
The Eheim Pickup 45 provides highly efficient, single-stage mechanical filtration with a fixed 180 LPH flow and an auto-restart feature, perfectly suited for freshwater aquariums up to 45 liters.
✓Precision German Engineering: Robust centrifugal pump delivering a consistent 180 LPH flow rate.
✓Energy-Efficient Operation: Draws only 5 Watts, minimizing electrical consumption for continuous filtration.
✓Optimized Mechanical Filtration: Utilizes a high-density sponge for effective particulate removal and water clarity.
✓Compact & User-Friendly Design: Internal, submerged installation with easy-access media cartridge for simplified maintenance.
✓Reliable Auto-Restart Functionality: Ensures seamless operation after power interruptions, safeguarding aquarium stability.
The Eheim Pickup 45 is a reliable choice for beginners with small 20-45 liter setups. Its standout feature is the clever 'pickup' design—the motor stays submerged while you lift the canister out for cleaning, preventing messy water drips. If you value German-engineered durability and need a compact internal filter for a betta or shrimp tank, this 5W unit is perfect. However, avoid it for heavily stocked tanks; with only 1-stage mechanical filtration and a fixed 180 LPH flow, it lacks versatility for high-waste environments.
✓ Who Should Buy
- •Freshwater aquarium owners with tanks between 20 and 45 liters requiring consistent mechanical filtration.
- •Hobbyists seeking an energy-efficient (5W), low-maintenance internal filter for water clarity.
- •Individuals establishing planted aquariums or shrimp tanks where gentle, fixed-flow filtration is preferred.
- •Users looking for a reliable, compact filter with an auto-restart feature for peace of mind after power interruptions.
✕ Who Should Avoid
- •Aquarists with tanks larger than 45 liters, as the 180 LPH flow rate may be insufficient for adequate circulation.
- •Saltwater aquarium owners, as this filter is not designed for marine environments.
- •Those requiring comprehensive multi-stage filtration (biological or chemical) from a single filter unit.
- •Users who need adjustable flow control or advanced features like surface skimming or UV sterilization.
Product Overview
The Eheim Pickup 45 represents Eheim's commitment to quality in compact aquarium filtration. This internal filter, identified by model number Pickup-45, is crafted in Germany from durable black plastic, embodying a minimalist yet highly functional design. It is engineered for complete submersion within freshwater aquariums between 20 to 45 liters, offering a crucial mechanical filtration stage. The unit operates with a non-adjustable maximum flow rate of 180 liters per hour, driven by an energy-efficient 5-watt centrifugal pump, ensuring consistent water movement and debris capture. Its compact dimensions (75mm L x 96mm W x 163mm H) and lightweight profile (0.6 kg) facilitate discreet placement. Key features include an auto-restart capability, enhancing reliability post-power outage, and standard suction cup mounting for secure installation. The Pickup 45 is CE and RoHS certified, confirming its adherence to European safety and environmental standards, making it a dependable choice for planted and shrimp-safe freshwater environments.

Engineering Analysis
The Eheim Pickup 45 operates on a fundamental yet effective single-stage mechanical filtration principle. Water is drawn into the unit by a 5-watt centrifugal pump, precisely rated for a maximum flow of 180 liters per hour. This fixed flow rate is engineered to provide continuous, gentle circulation suitable for small to medium-sized freshwater aquariums (20-45L), preventing excessive current which can stress smaller inhabitants or disrupt planted substrates. Filtration is exclusively achieved through the included sponge media, specifically designed to trap particulate matter such as detritus, uneaten food, and suspended debris, thereby enhancing water clarity. The 'Pickup' design inherently implies an accessible media cartridge, simplifying the removal and cleaning of the sponge without disturbing the entire filter body. While this filter excels in mechanical particle removal, it does not incorporate dedicated biological or chemical filtration stages, implying that supplemental biological filtration or appropriate tank cycling protocols are crucial for nitrogen cycle management. The 5W power consumption is notably low, offering an energy-efficient solution for continuous operation. Its auto-restart feature is a critical engineering detail, ensuring the pump automatically resumes function after a power interruption, preventing prolonged periods of unfiltered water. The absence of adjustable flow or self-priming capabilities underscores its design as a straightforward, 'plug-and-play' internal unit focused on reliability and core mechanical filtration.
