AC Blowing Warm Air? 6 Common Reasons

AC blowing warm air? Work through simple checks, from the remote and filter to the outdoor unit and gas, before you call a technician or pay for a gas refill.

Before you call for repairs, work through this simple check, from the remote to the outdoor unit.

It’s 2 pm in May. The power just came back after a cut; you switch on the AC, and... warm air.

Every Indian household knows this moment. And the first instinct is usually to call the technician, who often suggests an AC gas refill straight away.

But when your AC is blowing warm air, many causes take just minutes to fix yourself. Work through these checks in order, from easiest to most serious, before you spend a rupee.

Why is my AC blowing warm air: wrong mode or setting, dirty air filter, blocked outdoor unit, tripped MCB, faulty capacitor or compressor, and low gas or a leak

First, how your AC cools

Your AC has two units working together:

  • Indoor unit: blows room air over cold coils
  • Outdoor unit: pushes the heat outside using a compressor and fan

Refrigerant gas carries heat between them. If any part of this cycle stops, the indoor unit still blows air, but not cold air.

Check 1: The remote (1 minute)

Start here. It’s the most overlooked reason for an AC not cooling.

CheckWhat it should be
ModeCool (not Fan, Dry or Heat)
Temperature24–26°C
Timer or sleep modeOff, or set correctly
BatteriesWorking

Fixed? Great. Still warm? Move to Check 2.

Check 2: AC filter cleaning (10 minutes)

A clogged filter blocks airflow, so less air passes over the cold coils. With dust levels in most Indian cities, filters clog much faster than people expect.

Signs it’s dirty: weak airflow, a dusty smell, and slow cooling.

How to clean it:

  • Switch off the AC
  • Open the front panel and slide out the filter
  • Rinse it under plain water
  • Let it dry fully in the shade
  • Slide it back in

During summer, clean it every 2–3 weeks.

Check 3: The outdoor unit (5 minutes)

Go outside and look at the outdoor unit. It needs open space to release heat.

Look for:

  • Dust or leaves covering the grille
  • Pigeon nests or nets blocking airflow
  • Buckets, boxes or old furniture stacked around it

Clear at least 1–2 feet of space around the unit.

Now listen. Is the outdoor unit running?

  • Running and the fan is spinning: the problem is likely gas-related (see Check 5)
  • Silent or only humming: switch off the AC and go to Check 4

Check 4: Power to the outdoor unit

Sometimes only the indoor unit gets power, especially after a power cut or voltage fluctuation.

  • Check your MCB or circuit breaker
  • Reset it if it has tripped

If it trips again, stop. There’s an electrical fault that needs a professional.

If the power is fine but the outdoor unit is still silent, the capacitor or compressor has likely failed. The capacitor is the part that helps the compressor start, and it’s one of the most common failures after voltage fluctuations.

These parts carry high voltage. Don’t open the unit yourself.

Check 5: Do you really need an AC gas refill?

Here’s what many people don’t know: AC gas doesn’t get used up. If it’s low, there’s a leak.

Warning signs:

  • Ice on the pipes or indoor unit
  • A hissing or bubbling sound
  • The AC runs for hours without cooling the room

An AC gas refill without fixing the leak only works for a few months. Always ask the technician to find and seal the leak first.

Stop the problem from coming back

AC servicing calendar: full service in February to March, clean the filter every 2 to 3 weeks in April to June, check drainage in July to September, post-monsoon service in October to November

Most of these issues are preventable. A proper service covers:

  • Filter and coil cleaning
  • Gas level and leak check
  • Drain pipe cleaning
  • Electrical and capacitor inspection

Book a full service twice a year: once before summer and once after the monsoon.

With frequent power cuts and voltage drops common in many areas, a voltage stabiliser is also a smart investment to protect the compressor.
